Read Across America Basketball Game
at Liberty High School Gym

MARCH MADNESS COMES TO H.C. JOHNSON
4TH ANNUAL STUDENT / FACULTY BASKETBALL GAME!

This year the Johnson School is getting a “jump” start on its Read Across America festivities.  Beginning February 18th, students in grades K-5 will be participating in our “March Madness” reading challenge!

This year our campaign will spotlight the NCAA basketball championship while promoting the importance of reading.  Throughout the months of February and March, students will have the opportunity to investigate the history of the sport and the tournament.

As a culminating activity, our staff will be participating in a student/faculty basketball game to benefit the Media Center.  This exciting event will take place at Liberty High School on Friday, March 26th.  The game will begin at 7:00 p.m., and include a faculty half-time show and the “Parade of Champions”.

Two readers from each classroom will be awarded the opportunity to participate in the evening’s festivities.  As students finish reading a grade-level appropriate book, they will be asked to fill out a reading record sheet.  As students hand in their record sheets, they will then be entered into our raffle.

Pre-school through third grade will compete for the opportunity to be part of the “Parade of Champions”.  Students in fourth and fifth grade will be competing for a spot on the basketball team.  Throughout the next several weeks, we will be raffling off these positions, tickets to the game, and other surprises!

Tickets for this event go on sale the week of February 22nd.  Space is limited, so be sure to sign-up early.  We hope to see you there!  When we, as a school community work together to promote the importance of reading, everybody wins!

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy 100th Day of School!  We recently completed our food drive, which was a great success.  Thanks to your generous donations, which were used to support the Jackson Food Pantry.  In addition, I would like to thank our entire school community for the contributions for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
Read Across America March Madness is on the way to Howard C. Johnson School!  Don't forget to encourage your child to read each night.  Lets make March Madness a family event!  I hope to see everyone Friday, March 26th for the March Madness Basketball Game held at Liberty High School at 6:30 PM.  Come out and cheer for your team!
Our classrooms continue to be filled with activity. Mrs. Jean-Denis and I can attest to this, as we visit every classroom to experience the power of students engaged in learning.
The months of April and May promise to be very busy ones, so please keep a close eye on both the district and HowardC. Johnson school calendar. Don't forget to support our school as the Science Fair returns on Tuesday, April 20th.  The exhibits can be viewed from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.  Also on this date, please remember to vote!
Sincerely,
Al Giambrone
Principal
